TOME PREMIER [TOME SECOND]. A PARIS, Chez Tavernier, Libraire, Rue du Bacq, N.º 937. An IX. (1801.) 2 Volumes in 8.º de 20,5x13 cm. 2 Volumes in octavo. 20.5x13 cm. xxiv, 352; [iv], 320, [iv] pp. Full leather bindings, with red and green labels and hilt tools on the spine. Decorative endpapers, red edges and blue cloth marker ribbons. Copy with oleographic stamps of Dr José Joaquim Lopes Praça on the title pages. Moth spots on the spines and flaws in the upper corners. Small coeval annotations in ink on the back cover of the first volume. Last unnumbered leaves in the second volume include some letters and a petition, transcribed originally in Greek. The first French translation of this work was published in 1799, from the English original entitled: 'A survey of the Turkish empire'. The title page presents an extensive description of the contents of the work, divided into four points, of which the following stand out: an analysis of the government, finances and military strength of Turkey; a historical and social contextualisation of the region; the state of the provinces and peoples subject to the Empire and their efforts towards emancipation; a study of the Crimean Tatars; the causes of Turkey"s decline; British trade with Turkey. The Turkish Empire (Ottoman Empire) put an end to the Byzantine Empire in 1453 with the conquest of Constantinople; for almost seven centuries it controlled much of North Africa, Western Asia and South-Eastern Europe. Although some points of view may be at odds with the values and norms of the 21st century, the work remains an important and fascinating testimony to the way the British saw the Turkish Empire in the 18th century. William Eton was consul of the United Kingdom in Russia and Turkey, serving from 1795 to 1805. José Joaquim Lopes Praça (Alijó, 1844 - Montemor-o-Novo, 1920), illustrious philosopher, historian, journalist, essayist, constitutionalist, lecturer at the Faculty of Law in Coimbra and philosophy teacher to the late Prince Luís Filipe, began his professional activity as a secondary school teacher in Montemor-o-Novo a few months after graduating from law school. Manuskript / Papierantiquität
12mo, 2 pp, 20 lines. Bifolium with mourning border. Text clear and entire, on lightly aged paper with a few stains. He is enclosing 'Mr. Gladstone's answer on the subject of the inscriptions [not present]' which he asks to be returned to him. 'I had no opportunity of submitting it to him till Sunday last, and as you see I lose no time in passing on his answer to you [.] I drew his attention specially to the question of the two languages as you desired me to do'. Asks to be remembered to 'Miss Hawtrey'. The subject of the letter is unclear, but the fact that Gladstone was educated at Eton may be significant.
