Somewhat worn contemporary dark brown full calf with raised bands, gilt spine, brown title label and marbled edges. Blind tooled framework with gilt lines on boards, gilt edges and dentelles. Skin slightly worn on top of the spine. A small label with an ink numbering on inside of front board. Nice copy. William Falconer (1732-69) was a Scottish sailor and had experienced a number of shipping accidents. "The shipwreck" was published first time in 1762 and was an imminent success. A second edition was published in 1764 and while Falconer was working on a third edition, he was commissioned a sought after position as a purser on the frigate Aurora which was bound for India 1769. It left Cape Town on December 27 and was never heard from.

The book has moderate rubbing to the extremities, a crack in the text block at the beginning, and a 2" closed tear in the bottom margin of the first page of Critical Observations. A maritime poem first published in 1762.

Falconer's ability to describe storm-tossed vessels in his poem The Shipwreck came from his experience as a sailor. He was one of the three survivors of a ship voyaging from Alexandria to Venice. He was given the patronage of the Duke of York and became a purser of warships. In a full calf binding. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Internally, generally firmly bound but strained in places. Binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper indicates J.B Hawes of Cambridge binding. Ink inscription to verso of front endpaper. The odd spot to pages. Very Good. book.
