XXII,1064 S. Mit 30 kleinen Textillustr. // Author to Reader: [.]This is the year when history`s biggest T-bomb- "T" for "Tourist" -will scatter its golden fallout over 1,903,000 square miles of European landscape. It`s startling to realize that American trippers, numerous as we are, will constitute only a tiny pinch of powder in this mighty explosion. With the prosperity, bargain transportation, and the New Leisure this year, millions upon millions of continental vacationers will swap countries as tirelessly as some spouses in Hollywood swap wives. The boom is fantastic. Vast areas of wasteland have been reclaimed to lure the holiday-maker`s dollar or franc or pound. New hotels, restaurants, excursion targets, and other facilities are opening like popcorn on a hot griddle. Architects, contractors, painters, and plumbers are groggy from an epic dose of redecoration and modernization. From the Skagerrak to the Aegean to the Atlantic, Europe is twitching with a St.Vitus`s dance of compulsive mass movement. The Jet Age is no longer a promise. It is here. That`s why this 1960-61 edition of the Guide is such a very special one.// Contents: Author to Reader, Tips on Highspots, Let`s Get Ready, Let`s Go By Plane, Let`s Go By Ship, Let`s Be European, Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Eire (see Ireland and Nothern Ireland), England, France, Germany, Greece, Holland (see Netherlands), Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Scandinavian Airlines System, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, L`Envoi, Index /// Ecken bestossen. Temple Hornaday Fielding (Bronx County, 1913 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983) was a noted American travel writer, grandson of the famous naturalist William Temple Hornaday. He graduated from Princeton in 1939 and in 1941 he joined the US Army as a gunner and was later recruited into the intelligence services. During the Second World War, he was a psychological operations agent in Europe under the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and was also a captain attached to the Morale Operations Branch (MO) unit. Fielding was discharged from the army as a major in 1945. In 1951, he and his wife moved from New York to Denmark, but soon settled in Formentor, Mallorca, Spain, where he established the headquarters of the company Fielding Publications, Inc. The Fieldings constantly updated their information and spent at least five months of the year travelling and visiting tourist accommodation. He published the Fielding Travel Guides from 1948, from the 1940s to the 1980s the Fielding Guides were the most widely used travel guides for Europe and the Caribbean. The « Fielding?s Travel Guide to Europe», began as a guidebook written for recruits arriving at Fort Bragg in North Carolina during World War II. From his obituary in the New York Times of 19 May 1983, Section D, page 26: 'Although decorated by many governments for his contribution to the tourism industry, the Bronx-born Mr Fielding took great pride in being regarded as an adviser and companion to the average American traveller who wanted to know not only where to eat and sleep, but also which tourist traps and other pitfalls to avoid.'
