4 vols. Colour port. frontis., 46 ills. including several folding. From the library of Ann Savours Shirley, good in sl. rubbed d/ws. Hakluyt Society, Second Series, Nos. 152-155.'Overshadowed for nearly two hundred years in European scholarship by the achievements and reputation of his eldest son George Forster, J. R. Forster - principal naturalist on James Cook's second voyage - was nevertheless recognised by many contemporaries as one of the 'universal geniuses' of the late 18th century. His journal of the voyage offers many new insights, expressed at times in quite unrestrained language, into the day-to-day relationships, life and thinking and theory-testing on the second, and the most scientific and the most epic of Cook's voyages.' Buch Erstausgabe
(20,5 x 12,5 cm). - Henze II, 265; Fiedler, Forster 73; Sabin 25132.

Erstausgabe
First edition of Forster's study of the Australasian fauna encountered on Cook's second voyage, listing 305 animal species; "the most important zoological work with full results" (Rookmaaker, p. 48). This a particularly desirable tall copy in the original boards, largely unopened. LibraryHub cites copies at just 4 British libraries (BL, ZLS, Cambridge, and Natural History Museum). A distinguished naturalist, Forster (1729-1798) was employed as official naturalist on Cook's second voyage, accompanied by his son Georg (1754-1794) as an assistant; "the elder Forster proved to be a highly capable scientist and a keen observer - his works proved him a veritable genius in many disciplines - but he had a disagreeable personality and alienated the expedition's staff" (Rosove). The seven-decade delay in publishing the work impeded its immediate scientific influence: "The work was finished in outline as early as August 1775, only 3 weeks after return from the voyage. However, Forster continued to work on the manuscript while in London until 1780. It was in fact ready for publication but feuds and debts again intervened. In 1787, the Göttingen publisher C. Dietrich was willing to publish it and a manuscript of 458 pages was available. Forster wanted engravings to accompany the Latin text, Dietrich wanted a German text. No compromise could be reached. The manuscript later passed to the Royal Library in Berlin in 1799. The manuscript was published as late as 1844 edited by Martin Hinrich Karl Lichtenstein (1780-1857), curator since 1813 of the zoological museum in Berlin. the publication was an important event because it allows an evaluation of Forster's zoological work on Cook's voyage. In 1844, however, the Descriptiones animalium had become a document of historical importance rather than of scientific value. Had Forster published it around 1780, many animals would now carry names which he proposed in the Descriptiones animalium" (Rookmaaker p. 48). Beddie 1295; Ferguson 3822; not in Hill; Nissen 1413; see L. C. Rookmaaker, Zoological Exploration of Southern Africa 1650-1790 (1989). Octavo. Uncut and unopened in the original boards, spine and front cover lettered in black. Housed in a brown cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Very light soiling and very minor peripheral wear to boards, contents clean; a superb, well-preserved example.

Octavo, old stamp on title, minor paper flaw on one leaf; a very good copy in contemporary buff glazed boards, spine lettered in gilt at head. An attractive copy of this very scarce publication, not recorded by the Cook bibliographers Beddie or Holmes, and very important for the natural history of Australia and the southern hemisphere. Forster's manual on biological classification is based on the new species and genera seen by him and his son while naturalists on Cook's second voyage. Forster discusses the voyage in detail, and describes how parts of the work were composed during it. The text is intended to accommodate the significant expansion of the natural kingdom, and particularly the problems of description and classification arising from antipodean species. It presents a vivid picture of the collecting activities, methods, and constraints of the two naturalists. 'We have several useful post-voyage statements concerning the way in which Forster and his scientific team worked. One of the most valuable of these is contained in Forster senior's dedication to his son of his book Enchiridion. which contains short diagnoses of the genera of birds, fishes, insects and plants collected on the voyage. If we take the Enchiridion as the first source of our scientific evidence it is clear that Forster had resolved upon a precise programme of scientific and anthropological investigations. "My task", states Forster, "was to examine with the greatest care all of nature, lands, rocks, metals, streams and seas, unknown mountains, the composition of the atmosphere, and its changes, the plants and animals, whatever were there, and to describe more accurately new discoveries and see that they were sketched".' (Michael E. Hoare, The 'Resolution' Journal of Johann Reinhold Forster, Hakluyt Society, 1982; Hoare includes an extensive discussion of and quotes from the Enchiridion). . Provenance: Kerssenbrockx (unidentified; oval library stamp on title-page).
