Durnford who lost his life at Isandhlwana. The writer was evidently an enthusiastic admirer of the gallant soldier.? Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. 445 pages plus folded map (complete). Original boards have been re-cased with new end papers. A pleasing copy of this second edition (with additional information) of a most important book. The intent of its publication was to exculpate the fateful Anthony Durnford (who had been killed at Isandlwana) from Shepstone's accusations of incompetence, presumption and culpability for the loss of the battle. Frances Colenso was the daughter of Bishop Colenso - and hero-worshipped and adored Anthony Durnford. Edward Durnford was the younger brother of the fallen soldier. Both had access to insights both immediate and actual from their relationship with Durnford and from those who served during the war. Both were passionate and devoted to the book which laid the causes of the Zulu War quite firmly on the side of the British. The book had a luke-warm reception but has come to be a vital resource and reading for anyone interested in the Zulu War. This RARE copy is benign, agreeably so. The boards have wear, scuffing and handling and storage marks all about. It has been rubbed. They are secure, healthy. The contents are pleasing. They carry their age well. The title page has a previous owner signature (A H English). The page has splashes of foxing. The paper trims have storage marks. The pages are tight, gratifyingly clean and clear, confident, certain, keen and very assured. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

By. Assisted in those Portions of the Work which touch upon Military Matters by. Folding coloured map at the rear. Short closed tear to the title page, some minor splits to the folds of the map, which has been neatly reattached with a new stub and has some foxing verso, as often, but overall a very good copy in the original brown cloth, just a little rubbed at the extremities. viii, 492pp. 24pp. publisher's catalogue. Chapman and Hall, Mendelssohn I, pp.355-6; ?This work severely criticises the general policy of Sir Bartle Frere towards Zululand and its king, and it is maintained that the idea of the subjugation of the Zulus had occupied the minds of certain British statesmen since the year 1873, while it was well known that a war would be popular in Natal.? This copy with bookplate recording its presentation to the Library of the Scottish Conservative Club in 1890 by Sir G[raham] Graham Montgomery, Lord Lieutentant of Kinross-shire.
