Col. Fraser-Tytler war Kommandant einer Mörserbatterie (4.5-inch Howitzers) und stellt in diesem Buch in der Form von Briefen an seinen Vater seine Kriegserlebnisse in Frankreich von November 1915 bis August 1918 dar. Für den deutschen Leser ist besonders interessant, daß Fraser-Tytler durchwegs von seinem Gegenüber nur als Huns (Hunnen) spricht und im Text durchwegs klar ausspricht, daß ihn das Töten von Hunnen Freude machte und ihn persönlich befriedigte. Fraser-Tytlers menschenverachtende Sicht auf die Deutschen zeigt sich besonders extrem in dem im Anhang wiedergegeben "Gamebook of German Casualties from Personal Observation" dar, als persönliches Verzeichnis der 415 mit seiner Batterie im Krieg "erlegten" deutschen Soldaten.
