Erstausgabe
First Thus. Magazine Issue. 8vo. 23cm x 15cm. PUblisher's orange card wraps, title and contents printed in black and red to spine and front wrap, with ads printed to the rear wrap. A little scuffed and edgeworn, with some light soiling to the orange card, otherwise strong and bright. Amongst other articles dealing with socialist issues of the day, there is a piece entitled "A Third Way to End The War in Vietnam" by Vietnamese emigre Tran Van Dinh, ex soldier for Vietnamese freedom from the French and Japanese, Foreign Service dignitary and former Vietnames Ambassador to the United States, who makes the very interesting point that the majority of the Vietnamese population were peasant farmers, and "there are only two images which are close to the peasants, the Buddhist Monk, and the Viet Cong cadre. Both are austere, both are uncorrupted. The Viet Cong is feared and admired, but the Buddhist Monk is loved and trusted. The Viet Cong has power, the Monk has sincerity." The implication clearly being that the winning of hearts and minds should be away from one and towards the other, rather than towards an entirely new, unknown and unrespected third power.
