Cloth. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A scarce signed story of the Faversham Taylor family who's exploits have fascinated their descendants. Signed "To Leland L. Durean, with the author's kindest regards. July 1923." The Taylor family spread from Luddenham to Davington, favershamd and elsewhere in the county Kent. The author, George Samuel Fry was a descendant of Captain John Taylor. The long continued efforts of John Brownjohn to regain what he considered were his wife's rights and property is the focus of the scandal, however, the story most importantly shows the descent of eight generations of a Kentish Yeoman family. In a cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, sound with marks to boards and rubbed to corners. Bookplate to front pastedown and ink inscription to front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound with pages bright and clean. Good. signed by author. book.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. Three volumes in one handsomely bound book, containing parts I, II, and III of post mortem inquisitiones in the reign of King Charles I. A beautifully bound, three volume in one, set of Post Mortem Inquisitiones during the reign of King Charles I. This set is comprised of Part I, 1625-1636; Part II, 1637-1642; and Part III, A Miscellaneous Series. Edited by W.P.W. Phillimore (an English genealogist and publisher), George S. Fry, and Edw. Alexander Fry. Inquisitiones post mortem were concerned only with the property held "in chief" by the deceased, and were requisite in order to ascertain the feudal rights which accrued to the Crown upon the death of any tenant in chief. These three volumes cover the post mortem inquisitiones for deaths in the Gloucestershire area from 1625-1642, and were published in the late nineteenth-century by the British Record Society. In half morocco with green cloth covered boards. Externally, in lovely condition with very little shelf wear. A few chips to the leather on the back board. Externally, front joint is starting but remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. A few spots to the first and last few pages, otherwise pages bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.

Two pages, 8vo, very good condition, with a few holograph corrections. He thanks Lord Elibank for the loan of pamphlets, naming the one on Bismarck that he is returning. He agrees with most of what Elibank says about the Armada, finding the key question whether there was 'a strike of not'. He continues, "With regard to Lucy Walter. I have indeed read the late Lord George Scott's book and discovered the facts to which you refer. It seemed to me a delicate subject on which to write and this is the reason why I answered the question in such a general manner. For, were such a document found and if it still existed, it is difficult to imagine the constitutional issue that might result. Although on the strength of it, we are much better off having the House of Windsor, the first Duke of Monmouth did have great qualities and the present Buccleuch family are wonderful people [note by Elibank "They are. They are incidentally cousins of mine!"] | I would like to thank you again for writing to me in such a kind way. The more one reads history academically the more one comes up against rooted prejudice. This is one reason why I changed from history to law up here at Oxford." Lord Elibank has underlined the phrases and sentences to which he add a marginal note, presumably as part of a response, concluding with his expressing a wish to meet him when he's less "occupe".

3pp., 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Docketed at head of first page. She begins by explaining that at her 'interview with Mr. Bell on the 8th. he suggested an alteration in an important sentence, giving me the alternative of taking the MS. home with me or of correcting the sentence in the proofs. At the time I thought the latter course would be the best, but it occurs to me that it would save expence if the correction was made now.' She asks Cazenove to 'ask Mr. O'Connor if he would kindly alter the words in accordance with the enclosed [not present]'. She indicates the relevant sentence, adding that she assumes that 'it is the publishers who bear the cost of necessary alteration to the proofs, as nothing was said about it in the agreement'. Turning to the problem of 'how it is that a story supposed to be told by a man is written by a woman', she admits that she 'cannot think of anything that would do' by way of introductory explanation. 'Perhaps the title might read - | The Tramping Methodist. | The narrative of Humphrey Lyte, Preacher. | I would rather have this than put "edited by" before my name on the title page.' It does not appear that the suggested subtitle was utilised.
