(some browning, blank corner of frontis. torn away). original folding cloth portfolio (some browning, portfolio stained, heavily worn & frayed). numerous ms. notes. Second Edition of this popular tourist guide. The inside cover of the portfolio is inscribed To Bilodeau From Kin-ichi Kondo, Tokio Prisoners of War Camp #5, July 12, 1943, at Yokohama, Japan . There are several blank pages containing pencil notes and poems by Bilodeau, and several blank pages containing common French words and phrases, also written in pencil by Bilodeau, and used to teach the language to Kin-ichi Kondo, an interpreter at the camp. Albert Wenceslas Bilodeau [1913-2002] from Quebec was a warrant officer in the first battalion of the Royal Rifles of Canada, one of two battalions of almost 2,000 men making up C Force, sent to defend Hong Kong in 1941. Hong Kong was the first land battle of WW II in which Canadians participated. The British, Indian and Canadian defence forces were quickly defeated by the invading Japanese troops in December and survivors including Bilodeau were captured and held as POWs. Life in the camps has been described as brutal and inhumane, with many POWs, unlike Bilodeau, not returning home after the war. Kin-ichi Kondo was found guilty of war crimes at the Yokahama trials in 1947 and received a one year sentence.
