Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A full leather bound volume, with gilt detailing to the spine. This volume contains information regarding the lives of Oliver Goldsmith, William Collins and Thomas Warton, in addition to their poetical works. There is wear to the extremities, including fading to the top of the boards and spine, plus cracking and rubbing to the spine and a couple of minor scratches to the boards. There is a small split to the bottom of the spine. The hinges are strained but holding well. There is a dedication page written in ink, attached to the front blank-end paper. The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all internal pages securely attached. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, apart from some mild brown spots to a few pages, in particular toward's the front and rear of the book. Very Good. book.

Complete in two volumes. John Dryden (1631 - 1700) was an influential English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who dominated the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Walter Scott called him "Glorious John." He was made Poet Laureate in 1668. George Gilfillan (1813 - 1878) was a Scottish author and poet. He was one of the spasmodic poets, and an editor and commentator of earlier British poetry. In calf bindings. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities, slight rubbing and marks to boards and slight fading to spines. With an ink inscription dated 1863 to front blank of volume one. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout but with slight foxing predominantly to front and rear of volumes. Very Good Indeed. book.

Contemporary red full morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles to spines and upper boards, and elaborate blind tooling all over. All edges gilt; dark brown endpapers. Lightly toned throughout, with some spotting to first and final leaves of each volume. Heavy re-colouring to spines, with some bleeding into gilt, and some chipping. Good. A classic collection of 180 old English Ballads, first published in 1765, which inspired the poetry and prose of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Scott, among many others. It is especially strong on border reiving songs, such as Chevy Chase, and includes sections on Robin Hood, St George, the Arthurian legends, and songs thought to have inspired Shakespeare.
