Hardcover. Zustand: vg. First edition. 8vo. xx. 419 pp. Red cloth with gold lettering on front cover and spine. Original dj. Inscribed in Hebrew by author to Professor Yona Sabar of UCLA. Book condition is fine. On Judah Goldin [from National Foundation for Jewish Culture]: "Born in New York City in 1914, Dr. Judah Goldin received both a B.S.S from the City College of New York and a B.H.L from the Seminary College of Jewish Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America at the age of twenty, in 1934. He holds an M.A. from Columbia University and an M.H.L. and D.H.L. from the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he was also Dean and Professor of Aggadah. He has received honorary degrees from Yale University, the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Colgate University, and the University of Pennsylvania. He held faculty positions at Duke University and the University of Iowa before moving on to a fifteen-year career at Yale University and an even longer stint at the University of Pennsylvania. He is now retired, Professor Emeritus of Post-Biblical Literature at Penn. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He has also been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fulbright Research Scholar and has served as a consultant on Judaica to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Professor Goldin is a renowned scholar, a leader in the field of Midrash , the editor of some masterful text editions, most particularly the Shirta: The Song at the Sea Midrash (1971). He is the translator nonpareil of midrashic and other classical texts, including his popular edition of The Living Talmud: the Wisdom of the Fathers (1957) and of the earlier The Fathers According to Rabbi Nathan (1955). For many years he served as the editor of the Yale Judaica Series. He is also the editor of The Jewish Expression (1970). Dr. Goldin has consistently received praise for his uncanny knack for making difficult texts accessible to the common reader. His translation of Shalom Spiegel's book on the Akedah, The Last Trial (1967), together with his many other translations, makes him the most elegant and respected of Judaic popularizers. He has written on topics as diverse as the Archangel Gabriel and Honi, the Circle-Maker, and his writings are appreciated not only as works of scholarship but also as genuine works of art. Professor Goldin's wit, wisdom and warmth--and the electrifying atmosphere he created in his classroom--have endeared him to generations of students. One may count among his many disciples several prominent scholars who are currently among the leaders in the areas of Jewish literature, history and religion. It is not without reason that the Jewish Publication Society decided to inaugurate its "Scholars of Distinction" series in 1988 with a volume of Judah Goldin's collected essays, Judah Goldin: Studies in Midrash and Related Literature.".
