Zustand: Used - Very Good. Folio (9 x 14 in.) 916 pp. + Index; 1543 pp. + Index. Text in Greek and Latin, in two parallel columns. Bound in old vellum, soiled (esp. spine), with raised bands. Elaborate blind stamped ornaments on boards; boards also ruled in blind. Internally very sound with old dampstains affecting the corners of some leaves. Each volume with an engraved title including an elaborate printer's device. The binidng of volume 1 is split at one side of the spine, from top to bottom, but the cords are still in good shape, so the volume is still quite sturdy and usable. Very sound overall.

Erstausgabe
First edition. First edition. . In later hard paper binding. Knobloch's woodcut device at the end. Provenance: Shlomo Simonsohn's bookplate on front pastedown. ff. [100]. Scarce first edition of this collection of Gregory of Nazianzus' ten letters. An early Johann Knobloch imprint, with his woodcut device at the end. The texts were translated from Greek by Tyrannius Rufinus, and the book was edited by Johannes Adelphus (ca. 1480-1523) the German physician and humanist author. Considered as an important text among the humanists, both Beatus Rhenanus and Huldrych Zwingli held a copy in their libraries. Although no bibliographies mention any variants, the present copy slightly differs from all other we could compare it to (BL; BSB; NK Ä R Prague; ÖNB; Univ.bibl. Jena; ZB Zürich). For instance the present copy, unlike others, lacks the roman numerals in the signature mark on b2, thus we suppose our copy is an earlier imprint than those. . Binding bumped at corners, slightly rubbed at the extremities. Scattered tiny wormholes, no effect on the legibility. Inkblots on o1v and o2r at the lower margin, not effecting the text. Pages toned due to aging. Otherwise in fine condition. . In later hard paper binding. Knobloch's woodcut device at the end. Provenance: Shlomo Simonsohn's bookplate on front pastedown.
