43, [5], 20 pp.Joseph Gwilt (1784-1863) studied architecture with his father and at the Royal Academy. In his numerous works he shows himself to be an adherent of the classical style. With regard to the present work, Gwilt states in his preface that at first he only wanted to translate "Etudes d'Ombres" by Stanislas l'Eveillé. He concluded though that the text by l'Eveillé was too complex to have been generally useful and he adapted the text with his own theories, so that it could be more easily understood by the readers. The last 20 pages of the present work comprise a catalogue of books on architecture on sale at J. Taylor's architectural library.First leaf (the half-title) lacking, plates slightly foxed, otherwise in good condition.l BAL 1410. Not in Fowler; Millard.

Cloth. Zustand: Good. Not stated (illustrator). An academic treatise on civil architecture by the designer of Somerset House and the Pagoda at Kew. Edited by W.H. Leeds, this volume comprises William Chambers' treatise on Civil architecture, and Joseph Gwilt's discussion of Grecian architecture. With sixty six plates in total, collated and complete. Originally published in 1759, Chamber's treatise on civil architecture was influential on builders of the eighteenth century. Rather than dwell on details of construction and planning, the work offers suggestions for decorative architectural elements. Alongside Gwilt's examination of Grecian architecture, the work also includes ideas from the works of many 16th- and 17th-century Italian architects that were little known in Britain at the time. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown, 'Clarence Bacon, 18 Deepdale Street, Sutton in Ashfield, 1929'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'Watson Fothergill, Nottingham'. Fothergill was a British architect who designed over one hundred unique buildings in Nottingham. Stamp from Taunton Corporation Architect's Department to the recto of the front endpaper, dated 27th May 1964. In the publisher's original brown cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine. There is a small tear in the cloth at the front joint near the tail of the spine, and an inch-long tear in the cloth at the rear joint near the head. A little bumped, with a little loss to of cloth to the head and tail of the spine. The front and rear hinges are starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout. Good. book.
