Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. 11 pages text and 47 pages of plates. 25 x 18 cm. Original boards with original photo illustrated dust jacket. Hiroshi Hamaya (1915-1999) leading modernist photographer, known to have worked with the Tohosha group and for the naval authorities during the Pacific War. Taught himself photography from the age of fifteen. Between 1933 and 1937 worked as a freelance photographer for OrientalPhotographic Industries. Ten years after the end of the war, produced his first collection of photographs ( Yukiguni ). Post-war career can be divided into three separate stages: the struggle between man and nature ( Yukiguni , Henkyo no machi , Ura Nihon ), humans in difficult political circumstances ( China as I saw it & Document of Grief and Anger ), and nature without humans( Landscapes of Japan ). For many centuries Urumqi in Xinjiang Province has been a meeting point for cultures of the East and West. An area where Uigurs, Hui, Tartars, Mongols, Uzbeks, Russians, Kazaks, and Han Chinese live together under the adverse conditions of the desert. Throughout the1950s Hamaya was fascinated by the effects of harsh natural environment on human beings. Hevisited Urumqi in October 1956: This book is part of the World Photographers Series (Sekai shashinsakka shirizu).

Buch Erstausgabe
First edition; 8vo (257 x 181 mm, 10 x 7¼ in); black-and-white photographs printed in gravure, design by Sugano Umezaburo; photo-illustrated wrappers, light wear, publisher's printed wraparound band, near-fine; [104]pp. Hamaya Hiroshi is best known for his studies of the landscape, daily life, and customs and folklore in rural parts of Japan, as demonstrated in his books Yukiguni (Snowland, 1956) and Ura Nihon (Japan's Black Coast, 1957). A Record of Grief and Anger is his documentation of the protests that took place outside the National Diet Building in Tokyo against a passage in the 1960 renewal of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security (Anpo) between the United States and Japan, which allowed the presence of US military bases in Japan. Between 20 May, when the security treaty was approved, and 22 June 1960, millions of people took part in a series of demonstrations organised by the Zengakuren student association, the Japanese Communist Party, the Japan Socialist Party, and the Japan Labor Unions General Council, who united to organise some of the largest protests in Japan's history. Sympathy towards the protester's cause led Hamaya to photograph the Anpo demonstrations in great detail. On 15 June, demonstrators attempted to storm the National Diet Building and met with a strong police presence, during which a female literature student named Kanba Michiko was beaten to death. The Photobook A History III, p53; Provoke: Between Protest and Performance 2; The Japanese Photobook 1912-1990 p300.

Kirschenbaum which is in Japanese and English. Photographic wrapper, spine lettered in brown. Illustrated with 32 color plates and numerous black & white photos. Very minor bumping at fore-corners. "One of the most renowned Japanese photographers of the 20th century, Hiroshi Hamaya captured gripping images of people and landscapes in rural Japan for more than two decades. Hamaya, who learned how to take photographs as a teenager, started working as a freelance photographer in 1937 after one of his photos was published in Home Life magazine. He traveled extensively throughout Japan and globally during his career and was the first Japanese photographer to join Magnum Photos, the international photography cooperative." (Getty Museum).
