See her entry, and that of her husband, in the Oxford DNB. Hers states: 'most memorably used her energies to found the National Association for Supplying Female Medical Aid to the Women of India, often known as the Countess of Dufferin Fund, in 1885.' 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium on grey paper. Addressed to 'Dear Miss Faithful' and signed 'H. Dufferin & Ava'. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded for postage. She thanks her for her 'kind note' and will be grateful for any help she can 'ever give with regard to my Fund'. She has 'ordered a Report to be sent' to her, and she will 'get some idea of the progress the work makes in India' from the first few pages. She is finding it 'impossible to arouse any interest in it in England'. She has 'told the Secretary in London to forward anything of interest' to her, and will write if she has 'any thing special to point out' to her. Note: "Apparently Emily Faithfull destroyed much of her correspondence so this is a survival.
Toronto, Adam, Stevensen, 1873. 8vo (18.1 x 12.0 cm). 281 pp., engraved frontispiece, tissue-guarded portrait of the author, nine engraved plates including one of a skeleton in a coffin captioned: "Et ego in arctis", several wood engravings in the text. Original decorated cloth with bevelled edges and gilt title on the spine, and gilt title and large vignette on the front board. Toronto edition with a preface to the Canadian edition. Signed and dedicated by the author to a "Miss Caldwell" and dated "11 June 1875". The author Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava (1826-1902), "is now best known as one of the most successful diplomats of his time. He was chairman of a mining firm that went bankrupt after swindling people, although he was ignorant of the matter. His biographer Davenport-Hines says he was 'imaginative, sympathetic, warm-hearted, and gloriously versatile.' He was an effective leader in Lebanon, Canada and India, averted war with Russia, and annexed Burma. He was careless of money but charming in high society in three continents" (Wikipedia). Spine discoloured, worn at ends, a bit cocked, otherwise a very good copy.
