FIRST EDITION, frontispiece and 7 further monochrome plates, being portraits or manuscript facsimiles, a few holograph corrections to the text, corresponding to the author's 'Errata' lists to free endpaper and blank at rear, pp. xii, [1], 266, crown 8vo, original blue cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt, a few spots to edges and endpapers, tail edge roughtrimmed, ownership inscription of Evelyn Hardy (i.e., the author) to flyleaf, clipped review and some correspondence relating to this work laid in at rear, dustjacket a little nicked, chipped and rubbed, very good. The author's own copy. Evelyn Hardy also wrote on John Donne and Thomas Hardy; in this work, she continues in a line established by Virginia Woolf and Alyse Gregory (whose repeated misidentification with Lady Gregory is one of the points of correction within), in showing that the Swiftian love-triangle is 'a subject to which a woman can bring a special understanding' (dustjacket blurb). The handful of corrections identified and, in the main, executed by the author in her own copy address both factual and typographic errors. Laid in at the rear is a more thorough dismantling of her work, courtesy of a 5pp. autograph letter sent to the publisher by one William H. Welply, addressing various points in the text, and a friendlier letter addressed to the author by Germaine Cailar - who thanks her for a copy of the book, and mentions that she has already begun to translate it into French.

Zustand: used. A beautiful early 20th Century watercolour showing a Biblical scene, published in a book of Bible verse for children; the exact story is unclear. Hardy was known for her delicate and highly detailed watercolours that illustrated many children's books from fairy tales to Bible stories. This particular painting is typical of her work during this time in her career and is a very fine example of her skill with the medium. The artist has signed to the lower left and the painting has been handsomely presented in an early 20th Century gilt empire frame with low relief strap molding and lamb's tongue strap work at the inner window. There is an internal layered card mount. On wove. Size: Large (30-60cm) Framed: Yes Style: Realism.
