(Hardcover, 1986). (1814) 1986 reprint of 7th edition. 8vo (145 x 225mm). Ppxxiv,507. B/w plates and illustrations. Grey cloth, spine & upper board titled & decorated in gilt. Slight use but very good. Reprinted from the 7th edition (1833). "The original edition, which led to the publication of the following pages, was hastily written, at the particular request of some sporting friends of the Author, who had recourse to the press, in order to present each of them with a legible copy. A few supplementary impressions also were provided, for the amusement and instruction of the inexperienced sportsman, to whom, alone, he still presumes to offer so humble a production. To prevent enlarging this work to an expensive publication, all needless embellishments have been studiously avoided." That said, this book is comprehensive, very detailed, and quite long, and principally about wildfowling. A classic of its kind with much on dogs, guns, punt guns, and shooting from boats and various other vehicles. .

[Firearms reference] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 12cm), pp.xvi; 150. Publisher's drab grey paper-covered boards, printed title label to spine, edges untrimmed. Contents clean, covers a little bumped and marked, joints worn, chipped to crown of spine. A very good example of a rare book in first edition. According to a loosely inserted news-clipping from the Antique Trades Gazette, a similar copy (uncut in original boards) had sold at auction in Sept 2008 for £3000. Celebrated diarist, author, soldier and target shot, Hawker had served with the 14th Light Dragoons under the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War. He published his "Advice to Young Sportsmen" in 1814, a popular work with nine impressions in his lifetime. The first edition of his shooting classic did not credit Hawker as author and was printed in small numbers, principally for private circulation among his friends. An Australian review in 1893 claimed "probably no book on the subject of sport ever enjoyed so wide or so long sustained a popularity as the Instructions to Young Sportsmen.".
