First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Francis Haywood, To his friend, the Viscount de Cussy, 1847". The viscount was a French nobleman who married a lady of the Yorkshire gentry. This copy is well preserved in the original green cloth binding. Francis Haywood (1793/41858) produced the first English translation of the Critique of Pure Reason in 1838. Haywood's translation was praised by the philosopher William Hamilton (1788-1856), the leading contemporary British authority on Kant. Here, Haywood clarifies various confusions arising, as he sees it, from Kant's notoriously complex writing style. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine with remnants of paper label, top and fore edges uncut. Engraved Aldine device to title page. Light bumping, rubbing, and sunning, minor browning to endpapers and outer leaves, occasional slight separation between gatherings: a very good copy.
