Plus 84 steel engraved plates on 42 leaves, each with a tissue-guard. Engraved title-page with engraved vignette. HARDCOVER, bound in the original publishers half calf and printed boards, upper cover repeating engraved title-page. Binding is tight but worn, corners chipped, backstrip restored with neat cloth binder's cloth tape. Some foxing as often but the fine plates are generally very clean. Mediocre exterior, very good interior. ~ FIRST EDITION, first issue. This is the first part of Gastineau's work, covering North Wales. With the considerable success with which the book was received, Gastineau set out directly on a tour to make drawings for the consecutive volume, that of South Wales. Originally published in installments, the work appeared here for the first time in a book form. Some 15 individual engravers worked on transferring the drawings onto steel; Wallis, Allen, Watkins, Varrall are among the well known. 006-5.

Dated and informed by Swansea University Libraries. A collection of illustrations engraved on steel from original drawings, accompanied by historical and topographical descriptions. With commentary on various towns, buildings, residents, and archaeological findings from the areas explored. Volume one is illustrated with a vignette, frontispiece, and forty-four plates. Volume two is illustrated with a vignette and sixty-six plates. Written and illustrated by Henry Gastineau, an English engraver and prolific watercolourist. Bound in half calf with patterned boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and wear resulting in light loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine and marks to the boards. Loss to the head of the spine. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light age toning to the extremities. Tide marks and light spotting to most of the plates. The odd pencil mark to the contents pages. Good. book.

Begins: Mr H Gastineau presents his compliments to Miss Nelson and in consequence of having received her address from Miss Stringer relative to a wish to receive some instruction from him, he writes , giving details of when he would be able to give a lesson at Windham Place , were he to receive a line to say that such an arrangement was desirable, after which future appointments can be made .
