Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 29-37, 4 pl., 1 fig. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very clean. - From the text: The nationalist uprisings of 1848 in Europe proved immediately unsuccessful in Germany and Italy.1 Yet, within slightly more than a score of years, there was a unified monarchy in Italy and a new empire in Germany. The German Empire, with Bismarck as Chancellor, was much the stronger and more important of the two, but in one significant respect Italy was more fortunate: she had an illustrious ancestry reaching back to antiquity upon which she could call for emotional and national support. Not so in the case of Germany. That land s antiquity was exemplified by Tacitus Germania; it was a land "gloomy with forests or unwholesome with swamps" (5.1). Its earliest known history was inextricably linked with Rome, from the invasions of the Cimbri and Teutones, late in the second century b.c., into the warm lands of the south, to Caesar s "hoisting of the flag" on Germanic territory, and on to the great struggles of the decades around the beginning of the Christian era, when Roman invasion was countered by German defense. - Wikipedia: Herbert W. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 87-88. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name underlined on cover, otherwise very clean. - From the text: The late Arnaldo Momigliano chose the subject "The Classical Foundations of Modem Historiography" for his Sather Lectures, delivered at the University of California, Berkeley, in the spring of 1962. He devoted the penultimate lecture to "Tacitus and the Study of Tyranny." Publication was long delayed; the book appeared, with the same title, only in 1990, as a posthumous addition to that great series. The lecture on the Roman historian appeared as a chapter with a different title, "Tacitus and the Tacitist Tradition." - Wikipedia: Herbert W. Benario (* 21. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 163-176. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Source handwr. on cover, author's name underlined, otherwise very clean. - From the text: This essay is based upon one of the slenderest volumes of Latin literature. In the most recent critical edition it covers about twenty-five pages, a total of some 750 lines.1 And yet this tiny work, styled an aureus libellus upon discovery in the Renaissance, has had an impact upon the life of a modem people unrivaled by any other product of classical antiquity. Publius Cornelius Tacitus, who was to become Rome s greatest historian, was bom, in all likelihood, early in the reign of the Emperor Nero.2 His childhood was passed under that strange, debauched, and cruel ruler, whose enforced suicide in the year 68 was followed by the rapid succession of four emperors amid the horrors and cruelties of civil war. The successful claimant to the throne, Vespasian, established a dynasty which proved short-lived; he was succeeded by his two sons, Titus and Domitian. Tacitus entered upon a public career under the father and was advanced by each of the sons, until he ultimately reached the highest office open to a member of the senatorial order, the consulate. But the principale of Domitian proved to be a disastrous period for the upper classes of society, when the emperor persecuted the best men and women and, so to speak, virtue itself. - Wikipedia: Herbert W. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name underlined on cover, otherwise very clean. - From the text: In 1902 the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Theodor Mommsen, who was cited as "the greatest living master of the art of historical writing." Although the output of some 60 years of scholarly activity could have been so honored, it was specifically his Roman History, which had appeared almost half a century before, that gained commendation. "The concretion of the descriptions and the sharpness and clarity of his characterization made the learned historian one of the greatest writers of our time " (Espmark 17). This high distinction has been granted to only one other historian in the nine decades that have followed Sir Winston Churchill and there are those who would deny Churchill the name of historian. In the period of ever-increasing specialization which has marked this century, perhaps only a philosopher of history might have had a chance, but even an Arnold Toynbee was not chosen. - Wikipedia: Herbert W.
