Zustand: Very Good. mixed edition. Late 18th century half calf over marbled boards, VG. together 3 volumes. tp+[iv]+652+[20]pp, ht+tp+[iv]+588pp, tp+591- 1320+[47]pp, the first work has a title page portrait vignette & the whole is printed in double column within a ruled border, lacks the initial blank leaf a1, pagination errors, with the paper yellowed, the latter part of the work more browned, with a small worm hole to the margin of the last 100pp outside the ruled border. The second work which occupies the second 2 volumes has titles printed in red & black with a woodcut printers device in two colours, printed in double column & again many miss-paginations, half title with an old repair, LACKS GGggii ( leaf 903-904, 909-910 ), margin of pp1019 with a little loss but text unaffected, one sheet has been corrected by pasting the true signature over the incorrect ( at IIIii ), worming to approx 30pp at the bottom edge just affecting the text but the meaning clear from the context. Both volumes have attractive woodcut initails & tailpieces and both have the occasional ink spot or smudge & light foxing, occasional slight marginal water staining. Bindings are rubbed at the edges with the corners more so, all hinges weak but with the text blocks in strong condition. Uniformly rebound in the late 18th or early 19th century. The first work is a early edition, the first having appeared in 1617 whilst the Commentary on the epistles of St Paul first appeared in 1617 and was reprinted several times in the following 100 years. Two Biblical commentaries, including his most famous work on the Pauline Epistles, by the Dutch theologian & controversialist Willem Hessels van Est [ 1542 - 1613 ].The commentary on St Paul of particular merit, indeed, 'no serious student of the Epistles can afford to neglect this work' (Catholic Enc.). Of Est's writings in general it has been said that 'very few writers did more to show (and that in quite and unostentatious manner) the hollowness of [Calvin's] Biblical arguments than Est'. (ibid.). 7000 grams.

Zustand: very good. Parisiis, Apud Claudium Josse, 1666. Complete 3 tomi in 1 volume: (8), 578, (1 blank, 2 title-page), 579-1056, (2 title-page), 1057-1272, (12 index rerum and privilège) pp. Contemporary blindstamped calf with raised bands. Folio 25x36 cm. 3 Title-pages printed in red and black, with printer's vignettes (first: Concordia Amorem Gignit; second: In Spinis Collige Rosas) Some decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Uncommon edition of this classic commentary on the letters of Saint Paul and Catholic letters. Willem Hessels van Est or Estius, famous commentator on the Pauline epistles, was born at Gorinchem, Holland at a time of great excitement. Though the mildest of men, his whole life was spent amidst scenes of controversy and civil war. Luther was still in full vigour, Calvin was active at Geneva, and Europe was flooded with books and pamphlets violently attacking the Catholic Church. Very few writers did more to refute the reformer's Biblical arguments than van Est. He studied classics in Utrecht and thence proceeded to Louvain, where he spent about twenty years in the study of philosophy, theology and Holy Scripture. During the last ten years there he was professor of philosophy in one of the colleges. In 1580 he received the degree of Doctor of Theology. Estius wrote what is considered the best history of the Martyrs of Gorinchem, who were canonized by Pius IX in 1867. From this history we learn many details about him and his relatives. It is evident from the commentaries of Est that he was much influenced on questions of grace and free will by the teaching of his old professor, Baius; In 1582 he was made professor of theology at Douai, a position which he retained for thirty-one years. He was also for many years rector of the diocesan seminary and during the last eighteen years of his life chancellor of the University of Douai. He was afterwards styled doctor fundatissimus by Pope Benedict XIV. Most of Est's works, which were written in Latin, were not published until after his death. His greatest work is his "In omnes Divi Pauli et Catholicas Epistolas Commentarii" published originally in Douai, 1614-15. This work went through many editions of which the ones improved by Merlo Horstius from 1631 on, like our copy, are considered the best (Hurter; NNBW). In his commentaries he everywhere endeavours to arrive at the literal meaning of the author, with great judgement, acumen, and erudition. He refutes objections, as occasion arises, with calmness and freedom from passion. Small library stamp on first blank, binding damaged at edges, some wear and soil to covers, pages bit wrinkled at end but else a very good, solid and clean copy. NNBW, VI, pp. 418-423; Hurter, I, fasc. I p. 344vv; 2 copies (Nijmegen, Maastricht) of this edition in Dutch Central Catalog (NCC), 4 copies in OCLC; Condition : very good copy. Keywords : THEOLOGY, biblical studies New Testament, commentary old & rare books.
