Buch
Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 483-508. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover slightly light marginated, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: 601), constitute the main turning point in the history of Spain under the Visigoths. Instead of succumbing, as the Vandals in Africa and the Ostrogoths in Italy had done, to the Byzantine advance, the Visigoths, under Leovigild and Recared, succeeded in achieving the political and, later, the religious unity of Spain. The sharp division between an Arian barbarian ruling class and the Catholic Hispano-Roman mass of the population was brought to an end. This was not achieved without a major crisis, which began with the conversion ca. 580 of Leovigild s elder son, Hermenegild, to Catholicism. This event precipitated a civil war in Spain between Hermenegild and Leovigild, which ended in Hermenegild s defeat and eventually in his murder in 585. It is very remarkable that this crisis did not prevent the official entrance of the Visigoths, led by Hermenegild s brother, Recared, into the Catholic Church in 589. Buch
Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. XXII, 584 p.: Ill. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Buchrücken ausgeblichen, leicht berieben, Vorderschnitt minimal verschmutzt, sonst gut und sauber / spine faded, slightly rubbed, fore-edge minimally soiled, otherwise good and clean. - In this major new work,J. N. Hillgarth investigates how Spain was seen by nonSpaniards in the period when it was the leading power in Europe. The author brings together a wide range of sources that elucidate Spanish history and Spanish character, demonstrating the ways that propaganda has distorted both, in the past and even into the present. In the first of the volume's four parts, the author discusses the reasons-geographic, political, and religious-why Spain has proved a hard country to understand. Hillgarth looks at travelers to Spain, from pilgrims to diplomats, spies, exiles, and foreign residents. In the second part, special attention is devoted to the interaction among Christians, Jews, and Muslims, including Jewish and Muslim exiles and secret Jews within Spain. The book s third part explores reactions to Spain by those who saw it from the outside, the Italians, Dutch, French, and English. One chapter deals with the Catholic exiles from England, Scotland, and Ireland living in Spain, who, like the Jewish and Muslim exiles, played a double role in that they were at once "insiders" and "outsiders." In the final part, Hillgarth attempts to show how the crucial centuries 1500-1700 have affected the way Spain has been seen down to the present. The Mirror of Spain draws on a wide range of sources in many languages. It relieson documents in the Public Record Office and the British Library, the Archive General de Simancas and the collections of the colleges founded by exiles in Spain, as well as on major libraries in Venice and Jerusalem. The volume will be of interest to a broad spectrum of scholars, including medievalists, historians of Spain, scholars of political and literary thought, and all those interested in notions of national identity. / Contents Abbreviations List of Illustrations PART I Non-Spaniards and Spain chapter one.
