Thomas Hitt, a native of Aberdeenshire, served his apprenticeship at Belvoir Castle, the seat of the Duke of Rutland. The Duke, like his father, greatly delighted in gardening, and Hitt spent the majority of his life working life employed by the Duke as chief gardener at his homes within Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
