Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). Five plays by the popular seventeenth century playwright and politician, Sir Robert Howard. Being the third edition of this work, in a contemporary calf binding. With a portrait frontispiece of Howard. This work contains 'The Surprisal', 'The Committee', 'The Indian Queen', 'The Vestal Virgin' and 'The Duke of Lerma'. With a contemporary inscription to the title page at the edge. Howard's plays were extremely successful, some of his best works are to this volume. 'The Committee' a political comedy characterising the manners of the Commonwealth was one of his most popular. Critically, some preferred 'The Duke of Lerma'. John Dryden, Howard's brother-in-law co-wrote 'The Indian Queen' which is set at the courts of Peru and Mexico right before the Spanish invasion. A lovely pocket sized edition of these popular seventeenth century plays. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, rubbed to the boards, joints and spine. A small amount of loss to the leather at extremities due to rubbing. Several marks to boards. Crack to the head of front joint, resulting in the hinge being tender. Rear hinge is strained but firm. Contemporary inscription to the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with occasional scattered spots. Good. book.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A charming volume of Howard's works, featuring five of his plays, bound in a handsome vellum binding. Third Edition. This volume includes: The Surprisal; The Committee; The Indian Queen; The Vestal Virgin; and The Duke of Lerma. The political comedy, 'The Committee; Or, The Faithful Irishman' is recognised as one of his most popular works, though writers such as A. W. Ward believe 'The Great Favourite, or The Duke of Lerma' to be the most successful. The volume also features the play 'The Indian Queen' which Howard co-wrote with his brother-in-law, the poet John Dryden. Howard, who had acted as Dryden's patron for some time, went on to have a public dispute with him over the use of rhyme in drama, but they were reconciled before Howard's death. With a prologue, and an epilogue 'Spoken by Mrs. Ellen'. Sir Robert Howard (January 1626 3 September 1698) was an English playwright and politician, born to Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Berkshire and his wife Elizabeth. In a vellum binding with five raised bands to the spine, and gilt title detailing to spine. Externally, generally smart; lightly rubbed in places, with some handling marks and minor shelfwear. The hinges have been reinforced with new endpapers, with only original endpaper remaining. Ink copperplate inscription to the same original endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. The pages have some offsetting from the text, with some spotting and tidemarks to the bottom of all pages. There is a little loss to the margins of the title page. The occasional handling marks. Very Good. book.

FIRST EDITION. 187 x 119 mm. (7 3/8 x 4 3/4"). 3 p.l., xli, [1], 183, [1] pp. Contemporary red goatskin, intricately gilt, elongated filigree panel on front and back cover, raised bands, heavily gilt spine, marbled pastedowns, all edges gilt. A Large Paper Copy printed on special thick paper. Front pastedown with bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Wing H-2999. â Color of leather slightly variable, corners a bit bumped and rubbed, trivial wear elsewhere, but the unrestored binding solid and certainly pleasing, and AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY INTERNALLY, the text as bright, clean, and fresh as one could hope for, with particularly ample margins. Although its text is of some interest to the understanding of English history, this work does not typically command great antiquarian value, but when a copy like the present one--in contemporary red morocco and in remarkably fine condition--turns up, the book is considerably more desirable than usual. Best known as a playwright and politician (and brother-in-law to Dryden), Howard sets out in this work a formal defense of the legality of the Glorious Revolution and explains how James II had effectively deposed himself. Countering the theory of the absolute divine right of kings, Howard writes, "a King has a Divine Right, which is affixt to all Contracts. Now if there were no Contract . . . in what can he have a Divine Right?" He goes on to argue for the limited monarchy of William and Mary and how "Naturally every Man has alike a Divine Right to his Life, Freedom, and Estate." This book is uncommonly seen on the market as a contemporary copy in anything approaching the especially attractive condition seen here.
