2 vols., 8vo, pp. xliii, [i], 523, [1]; x, 494, [2, ads]. Errata slip at end of second vol. Untrimmed in original grey paper boards. Slightly dusty, a few spots, blank corner of errata slip torn. Rebacked with buff paper, new printed paper labels, edges worn. Ownership stamp of R. Barclay Murdoch to title-pages and endpapers, typed booklabel of an Edinburgh Friends Meeting House (amended in ink) to pastedowns. John Hoyland (1750-1831) initially published this treatise anonymously, though it must have sold reasonably well to see a second edition two years after the first (albeit still self-published) and a third the following decade. The text analyses scriptural history, in the process identifies biblical sources for figures in Greek mythology. Heyland was a Quaker, though temporarily ?disunited? because of a relationship with ?a black-eyed gipsy girl? (ODNB), and this copy has Quaker provenance; R. Barclay Murdoch was a Quaker publisher and it was later in the library of the Quaker Meeting House in Edinburgh, first when it was on Rutland Street and then Stafford Street.

This work based on a study made on gypsies living in Northampton, Bedford and Hertford, is one of the first works to consider the relationship between state governments and gypsies. The author was especially interested in the problem of educating gypsy children. Some of the historical information is based on Grellman's work. Black, Gypsy, 2086. Goldsmith 21379. Kress B6713.

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. A first edition copy of the first English survey of Romani people by the English Quaker and author John Hoyland; often cited as the standard nineteenth century work on the subject. Examining gypsy lore and beliefs, the history of gypsy society, and a survey on nineteenth century "Gypsies". Printed for the author, and sold by W M Alexander; Darton Harvey and Co; W. Phillis; W. Darton, Jun A sympathetic observer of the plight of the Romani people living in Northampton, Bedford and Herts, John Hyland began studying the history and culture of the Romani of the East Midland counties in 1814. As a result of extensive survey work, in which sent questionnaires to local authorities, Hoyland produced this work in order to draw attention to his perception that the Romani needed religious conversion, a better standard of living, and forced education. This work was largely based on Matthew Raper's translation of Heinrich Moritz Gottlieb Grellmann's 'Zigeuner'. This German text was the first work of 'Tsiganologie'; a work that deals with the history, culture and origin of the "Gypsy" as a designated socio-cultural and ethnic group. The name, research direction and premises of Tsiganology are controversial and are now criticized and often rejected by racism research. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. Rebacked, in a quarter cloth binding with the original boards preserved. Externally generally smart with slight loss and wear to extremities of original boards. The odd mark to boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned but bright and clean, with the odd spot to the occasional page. Very Good Indeed. book.
