Two volumes, 8vo, pp. viii, 145, [1] blank,[1] errata; [iv], 176; a little spotted at the beginning of volume I; otherwise a good copy in contemporary half roan, pink endpapers, spines lettered in gilt. First collected edition of the poems of George Huddesford (1749-1809). This is a nice presentation copy, inscribed on the flyleaf of volume I: 'Francis Stratford esqr with the Author's sincere respects'. Quite a few of the poems in the first volume are in fact by other authors, as Huddesford readily acknowledges, such as the younger Thomas Warton and others. Huddesford's father (also George) was President of Trinity College Oxford, where the young man would doubtless have made the acquaintance of Warton (a lifelong Trinity man); however, although George the younger matriculated at Trinity he soon moved to a scholarship at New College and in 1772 vacated at fellowship there when he made an impulsive marriage. Once in London, Huddesford studied painting with Reynolds and exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy; he also made the acquaintance of the dissolute and unbalanced poet John Codrington Bampfylde and began to publish verse. His first attempt was Warley, a satire (1778), a poem which ridiculed the military reviews at Warley, Essex; Fanny Burney was distressed at its public confirmation of her authorship of Evelina, and its tone was a little misjudged, which is perhaps why it is not reprinted here. Also included are two or three poems by Bampfylde (a particular friend, with whom Huddesford was painted by Reynolds in a celebrated double portrait), among them one of his famous and influential sonnets, first published in a scarce collection in 1778.
