A later edition of "one of the earliest and handiest little books published on the subject in a popular form" (Planché, p. 249), produced by the heraldic engravers Clark and Wormull. The preface notes that the book was "first designed to instruct a few private persons", and, as such, it "appears to be the first book on heraldry compiled specifically for middle-class readers with little or no knowledge of the subject" (ODNB). The title was first released in 1775 as a "small pocket-sized booklet of some fifty-five pages, consisting mainly of twelve plates and a glossary" (ibid.). Subsequent editions were released quickly by the publisher and bookseller Kearsly, with this edition enlarging on the fourth. ESTC T113275; Lowndes 469. The Recollections and Reflections of J. R. Planché, vol. II, 1872. Small octavo (157 x 90 mm ). Contemporary half calf, smooth spine with red label and blind-stamped within compartments lined in gilt, marbled sides, edges sprinkled brown. With 28 engraved plates. Title page signed by Jos[ep]h Collyer, perhaps an associate engraver of the Royal Academy (1748-1827). Wear to extremities, spine and joints sometime retouched with colour, front free endpaper slightly detached, faint offsetting from etchings to signatures 4 and B1, couple of gatherings foxed, slight loss of paper to outer margins of plates 13-18 and 27 (with no loss to etchings), otherwise clean. A very good copy.
