He was well know in the west of England and wrote important monographs on diphteria and on Devonshire collic. Huxham seemed to appreciate that a difference between typhos and typhoid, at that time usually regarded as one condition. This book included the first use of the wird influenza" by an English physician. - cf. Garrison & Morton (1st. Engl. Ed. 1750).

The first collected London edition (1752-70) was rounded off by a third part published posthumously for the years 1749-1752.

John Huxham (1692-1768), one of Boerhaave's pupils who had studied Hippocrates in the original, gave in his Essay on fevers careful and original obervations of many infectious diseases. In 1747 recommended that 1200 sailors of the Admiral Martin's fleet, who had been disable by scurvy, be put upon a vegetable diet. In his essay on malignat sore thorat (1757), he was the first to observe the paralysis of the soft palate which attends diphtheria and which confused with scarlatina. His most important contributions to medicine were in connection with fevers and ifectious diseases. John Huxhum, Arzt in Plymoth, Mitglied der Royal Soc. in London, war einer der angesehensten Pratiker des 18.Jhdts. und ein hervorragender Epidemologe. Seine Abhandlungen über die Fieber, Influenza, Diphtherie, Pocken, Thyphus, Die Devonshire-Kolik, etc. gehören zu den wichtigsten medizinschen Arbeiten seiner Zeit. -cf. Hirsch.-H.
