Erstausgabe
First and sole edition. A very smart copy, bound expressly for General Sir Reginald Wingate, at the expense of George, fourth Baron Abercromby, with an autograph letter signed presenting this copy and commenting that Sir Ralph was Wingate's "predecessor in Egypt" and "a soldier whom I know you admire". An apt and appealing provenance. For a century and a half this biography by Abercromby's son, covering the years 1793-1801, was the only memoir of Sir Ralph, "a popular, well-known commander who became something of a father figure within the British army. His heroic death, like that of his most famous subordinate, John Moore, who fell at Corunna in 1809, caught the British public's imagination and inspired many an artist" (ODNB). Educated for the law in Edinburgh and Leipzig, Abercromby chose instead a military career and purchased a commission into a cavalry regiment in 1756. He served in Germany during the Seven Years War, the ill-fated Flanders campaign - at the conclusion of which he was "hailed as Britain's greatest general" (ibid.) - the West Indies, Puerto Rico, the Helder, and Egypt. His well-rehearsed amphibious assault at Abu Qir Bay in March 1801 "ran like clockwork" (ibid.) and he inflicted a stinging defeat on French forces. However, "either because of his not inconsiderable courage, his severe short-sightedness, or both he had strayed dangerously close to the enemy" and was hit by a musket ball in the thigh. When evacuated to the fleet's flagship, HMS Foudroyant, ODNB notes that "his concern for the well-being and efficiency of the rank and file shone forth; he insisted that a soldier's blanket that had been fashioned into a pillow for him by an aide should be returned to its rightful owner at once. After rallying a little he faltered, and finally succumbed to septicaemia at 11 p.m. on 28 March 1801 Coming after a long period of reverses and disappointments his triumph at Abu Qir, which rendered France's foothold in Egypt quite untenable, restored the army's reputation and testifies to his considerable abilities as a general". Reginald Wingate's distinguished army career was crowned by his appointment as governor-general of the Sudan (1899-1916) and high commissioner in Egypt (1917-1919); "at the time of his death he had long been the senior general in the British army" (ODNB). Provenance: 3-page autograph letter signed J. G. Abercromby to "Dear Sir Reginald" remarking that "I have met with a copy of his Life & had it bound on purpose for you in the hope that you will accept it as a small remembrance of me"; dated 3 July 1902, embossed letterhead of 39 Charles Street, Berkeley Square; and with Wingate's attractive armorial bookplate (dated 1903), etched by the notable bookplate designer George W. Eve. Sandler 1087. Octavo (220 x 135 mm). Early 20th century red crushed morocco by Morrell, decorative gilt spine, sides with panels of gilt fillets, gilt edge rule and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt top edge. Engraved portrait frontispiece (dated 1831) of Sir Ralph by H. D. Cook after the painting by John Hoppner, not called-for but included by the donor. Light offsetting from frontispiece to title page. A most attractive copy.
