Patterson was 19 years old when the Civil War broke out; he was an Ohio native who two years earlier had gone south to seek his fortune first as a book salesman then as a schoolmaster and clerk. His journal runs from May, 1861 to April 9, 1865 and moves through battles such as Williamsburg, Sven Pines, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg (where he was captured). He remained a prisoner until he was exchanged and returned to Richmond in the final days of the war.

Zustand: Very Good. Autograph Letter Signed. Folio (8" x 12 ¼"). 2pp. Grove Hill, Alabama: May 18, 1861. An early Civil War letter written by John D. Dewitt, who later served in a Confederate Cavalry Company from Alabama, to a friend who had already enlisted "to defend his country". Light soiling and two small holes at an old fold, very good. An informative long letter, neatly written in ink on the recto and verso of one large folio sheet. DeWitt briefly informs his friend "Brother Talbert" of his work and health at home, and relates in detail a fisticuffs between two men that culminated in the shooting, and likely killing, of one of the men: ". Leonidas Davis was shot by James Johnson the other day through the body. It is hoped that he will recover but doubtful. They had a little difference about a military company and got to fighting and Leonidas was getting the upper hand . then [Johnson] drew his pistol and shot him. Davis fell, and as Johnson run off he shot at him and hit this brother Bill in the neck, but he only slightly wounded Bill. They haven't got Johnson ." He then notes that he must take leave "as I want to go with a company of men to catch a runaway Negro"; and concludes with a meditation on Talbert's patriotism that inspires him to do his part to defend the country: ". I hope the time is fast approaching when you may again realize the pleasures of home . you think that everyone should be at his post at this time to defend his country that could leave, and of course my chance is as good as yours was & I did not go. But my patriotic passions are not so great as yours & you know that it would have gone hard with a man naturally weak anyway to leave his wife so soon after marrying, however our country must be defended and I am willing to do my part." According to Confederate Pension records, DeWitt enlisted as a Private in the Adam's Cavalry (Co. I) and survived the war. An historically significant letter, giving a first-hand view of attitudes among Southern men of military age at the start of the Civil War.
