John Gay (1685-1732) was an English poet, 'The Beggar's Opera' being his most celebrated work. He was a long friend of Alexander Pope after having dedicated his work 'Rural Sports' to him; they both joined the Scriblerus Club, a group of Augustan authors prominent in the early eighteenth century.With illustrations in black and white by Gordon Ross.With a gift inscription reading, 'To Kim, with my kindest C. A. Buckley Jr., Pebble Beach, 1941.'A limited edition, being one of fifteen hundred and fifty copies. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with some wear to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Boards are a little bowed. Gift inscription in pencil to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have just the odd spot. Very Good. book.
