With a frontispiece to all volumes and occasional vignettes to pages. The editor of this work, David Masson was a Scottish academic who made regular contributions to 'Fraser's Magazine', 'Dublin University Magazine' and many other contemporary periodicals. Masson's true scholarly prowess lay in his Milton editorials. His magnum opus was his 'Life of Milton in Connexion with the History of His Own Time'. His library edition of Milton's works first appeared in 1874. With a gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Margaret Drummond from her affectionate father on her 21st Birthday'. These three volumes contain Milton's minor poems as well as his famous epic poem, Paradise Lost. A charming three volume set. In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, very smart. Minor patches of rubbing to the spines and just a small amount of shelfwear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. No Jacket. 1882 edition. 3 volume set, each with an interesting bookplate under their front boards in which Mr Alexander Buchanan (Assistant Professor of Humanity) was presented this set, along with 22 other volumes, by the Students of the Junior Class as a "Mark of their Regard and Esteem". The boards of each are shelf rubbed and edge worn, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there is some age-related tanning and foxing throughout the set, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages remain neat, legible and complete. The bindings are secure.
