Abelard was a medieval French scholastic philosopher and theologian. Heloise was a French nun and abbess. The letters were originally written in Latin. This work was inspired by Alexander Pope's poem 'Eloisa and Abelard'. Written by Joseph Berington, a priest and prominent British Catholic author. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown. Bound without front endpaper. One page of publisher's advert to the rear. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards and spine. Some loss of paper to the board. Fading to the spine and to the head of the front board. Lacking front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd mark. Very Good. book.
