A new enlarged and revised edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. A fascinating work on the history of sports and other recreational activities in England, from the earliest period to the late 18th century, illustrated with 140 vignette engravings depicting these pastimes. Written by Joseph Strutt, an English businessman, philanthropist and social reformer who donated the land for England's first urban public park, Derby Arboretum. This scarce 1969 edition of the original 1801 text was enlarged and corrected by J. Charles Cox, and contains a preface by Norris and Ross McWhirter. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Dust wrapper is generally smart and bright except for sunning to the spine and upper extremities, and a little chipping to the upper extremities and folds of the flaps. Fine. book.
