Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. KENT, Elizabeth. Flora Domestica, or the Portable Flower-Garden; with directions for the treatment of plants in pots; and illustrations from the works of the poets. xxxiv, [2], 396pp., half-title. A very good copy bound in later 19th century dark green morocco, with gilt borders, gilt foliate corner pieces, and the spine gilt in compartments. Marbled end-papers, all-edges-gilt. Some slight foxing. 8vo. for Taylor and Hessey. 1823. ~ Elizabeth Kent (1790-1861) lived in London, but wanted to live in the country. Dismayed at the number of pot-plants given to her which failed to thrive, she published her useful guide to container or 'portable' gardening in 1823. She had taught herself botany and foreign languages, and her sister's marriage to the radical poet and journalist Leigh Hunt brought her into contact with the Romantic circles. The book combines practical instruction on how to select plants which will thrive in containers, and in the polluted air of cities, with quotations on gardening and flowers from ancient as well as modern authors such as Keats and her friend Shelley. Her common-sense advice on plants from adonis to zygophyllum and on their care - use rainwater if possible, but never over-water or let pots stand in water, for example - is equally valid today.

Buch Erstausgabe
(Arzneibuch ohne das Kochbuch). 8 Bll., 325 S., 9 Bll. (Register). Seltene deutsche Ausgabe dieses in England äußerst populären medizinischen Kompendiums (über KVK konnten wir überhaupt nur die Ausgabe 1700 auf der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek in Dresden nachweisen). - Die erste deutsche Ausgabe erschien 1700, das englische Original unter dem Titel "A Choice Manual, or Rare Secrets in Physick and Chirurgery Collected and Practised by the Right Honourable the Countess of Kent, late deceased" erstmals im Jahre 1653. - "This work has often been ascribed to Elizabeth herself. However, W. I. Gent, who also produced a book of remedies for the plague in 1665 (his name may have been William Jervis), makes it clear in his prefatory matter that the collection was made by him for Elizabeth`s use: this small Manuall was once esteemed as a rich Cabinet of knowledge, by a person truely Honorable . Associates of Elizabeth contributed a few items to it, and one item alone is attributed to her. The collection was very successful; an edition of 1708 claims to be the twenty-first" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). Notiz. *** *** Copyright: Matthaeus TRUPPE Buchhandlung & Antiquariat - Stubenberggasse 7 - A-8010 Graz - ++43 (0)316 - 829552 *** *** Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 400 Kl.-8°. Mod.
