An examination of the experiences of George I's unfortunate consort, with a closing chapter on 'the characteristic traits of the youth of George III'. Folio, 2 pp. On first leaf of bifolium, with the verso of the second leaf docketed, under the heading 'King's Warrant'. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Headed '(Copy)', and with 'George R' in a bold hand in the top left-hand corner. Although the signature is almost certainly not in the hand of the king, the document is docketed in pencil: 'Signature of his late beloved Majesty King George III on Copy of a Warrant retained by General Saml. Townsend'. Begins (in another hand): 'Whereas We are given to understand that our Trusty and Well beloved Major General Samuel Townsend Inspector General of the Recruiting Service is set insuper in the Account of Our Right Trusty and Well beloved Counseller Richard Rigby late Paymaster General of Our Forces for the Sum of Seventeen Thousand Four Hundred Sixty Four Pounds Fourteen Shillings and Eight Pence being Money Imprested to him for carrying on the above Service from the end of the year 1778, to the 24th. day of June 1786 [.]'. The document records that the original was signed by Pitt, Eliot and Aubrey, as 'Commissioners for auditing the Public Accounts', 'the Commissioners having recommended unto Us to discharge Major General Samuel Townsend from rendering any further Account of the same'.

An interesting letter regarding the early cultivation of bananas in London. 1p, 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight nicking to one edge. Neatly written over nine lines. Reads: 'Sir Everard Home is much obliged to Messrs. Laddiges for a present of some very fine Bananas, which were quite ripe, and had a flavour Sir Everard had no idea that they ever could acquire in this Climate. He mentioned yesterday to Mr Eyton with astonishment who said they had fruited at Kew, but not He believed to such perfection'. 'Eyton' is probably the naturalist Thomas Campbell Eyton (1809-1880), a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Text complete, on aged paper with a number of closed tears repaired with archival tape. The second leaf of the bifolium, lacking a strip at the top, is docketed 'Dr. Morris of Parliament Street's Success in curing Persons afflicted with Complaints similar to that which His Majesty labours under'. Considering the political content at the end of the letter, the author is probably Charles Hamilton, at the time of writing known by his courtesy title of Lord Binning. Hamilton begins his letter: 'I beg leave to communicate to you that Doctor Morris of Parliament Street, Physician to the Army & of great skill & ability has lately successfully recovered three Persons labouring under the same disorder which now afflicts our gracious Sovereign; viz: Mr. Woolery of Jamaica, Mr. Walker of John Street & lastly the Anatomist Mr. Sheldon whose case in particular he considers to have been exactly parallel to that of His Majesty. [According to his entry in the Oxford DNB, Sheldon had an attack of 'brain fever' in 1788.] Doctor Morris moreover, has repeatedly declared to me that he had not a doubt, with the Almighty's blessing, of restoring the King in a short time'. Morris is 'well known to & in habits of friendship with Mr. Dundas of Richmond'. He ends with by discussing some political matters: 'after several flattering assurances, Mr. Rose at last has declined all together entering the minute promised by Mr. Pitt & [.] unless you have the goodness to speak your self to the Minister on the subject, nothing will be done'. In reporting Morris's death, The Times, 31 May 1791, described him as: late Inspector General and Physician to his Majesty's forces in America.' Munk's Roll states that he was 'elected physician to the Westminster hospital in 1761, and retained his office for thirty years'. It also states, apparently erroneously, that he was a Fellow of the Royal Society.
