Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp xvi, 440. Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered gilt on spine and on front cover. First Edition. The second of the author's two future-war novels. These two novels are the sum total of his literary output. Kipling (1885-1947), an American, both of whose books were published in London, saw service as a Major in the American Ambulance Service during WWI. He is buried in Arlington Cemetary, his wife next to him. A reviewer wrote: "The Shadow of Glory is written with so much reason and with such an air of verity that politicians, diplomats, commanders and rulers may well take heed and realise that unless there is some strong united effort for peace, universal war will soon involve all the great nations of the earth." The author realising that an appendixis unusual for a purely imaginary story, provides an Introduction to his long Appendix, pp. [385]-440, that, as the reviewer said, "contains lists of the navies and Powers engaged, their battle organisation, the war strength of the land forces, explanatory notes on technical details and a bibliography of naval and military subjects, international law and statistical works which make valuable reference for those interested in the preservation of the world's peace." Strikingly accurate in many respects, predictive of World War I in Europe, even to Russia joining the Allies, with the action also taking place in the Pacific, Manchuria, and also involving the Japanese. In Bleiler: Imaginary wars and battles. Bookplate on the front pastedown of Jo and Bryan Hanson. Slight marking and wear to covers, with two tiny nicks at spine hinges, otherwise very good minus with clean text.
