8°: XII with a lithographed signature on the back of the title page and with interleaved etched portrait and paper guard, pp. 20-351, [1] blank, three quarter blue morocco with blue linen boards, gilt embossed lines on boards, spine with gilt embossed decoration, raised bands, two red spine labels with gilt embossed titles, light blue marbled endpapers, gilt top edge, uncut fore edge and lower edge, some pages uncut (Very Good, minor staining on the boards, tiny tears in paper guard) FINE BINDING SICILY NAPOLEONICA: A superb example, handsomely bound in a fine three quarter blue morocco, probably from the library of Napoleon II. The present work concerns the efforts of Lieutenant-General William Bentinck, the British envoy to the royal court of Sicily from 1811 to 1814, to robustly interfere in that island's internal affairs, to compel it to adopt a liberal constitution and to form a special defensive-commercial alliance with Britain. The story is a fascinating drama, with many curious twists and turns, that while largely forgotten today, it was then a pan-European cause célèbre. The book was written by Captain Francis (Francesco) Romeo, a Neapolitan soldier who served as a senior aid to Bentinck during his time in Sicily. It is historically valuable in that it provides an insider's account of the exciting events in Palermo. During the Napoleonic Wars, the Royal Navy assume complete dominance over the Mediterranean. Britain assumed possession of Malta and the Ionian Islands wition to Gibraltar, served as excellent operational bases. Britain, at the height of its imperial ambition, proceeded to employ its maritime power to significantly interfere in the internal politics of various Mediterranean islands and coastal regions for the first time. It was in this context, that Britain become heavily involved in the affairs of Sicily. Circling back, upon the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars, Sicily was part of the Kingdom of Sicily, that controlled the island, plus much of southern mainland Italy; for this reason, the country was often called the 'Two Sicilies.' The realm was ruled by Ferdinand I, who was heavily swayed by his headstrong wife, Maria Carolina of Austria. In 1806, Napoleon's legions invaded the mainland part of the country, causing Ferdinand's court to move from Naples to Palermo, whereupon it sought British protection. Zustand: Como nuevo. With illustrations by Edward Landseer, Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, Frank Stone, Richard Doyle, John Leech and John Tenniel, and with a new Introduction by Cedric Watts, Research Professor of English, University of Sussex. In these five long stories, written specifically for Christmas, Dickens combines his concern for social ills with the myths and memories of childhood and traditional seasonal lore. A Christmas Carol, the first of the selection, has become a touchstone of English festive fiction and an enduring favourite internationally. Repeatedly adapted, parodied, staged and filmed, this richly influential tale is powerfully vivid and moving. The other stories, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man, blend whimsy, sentiment, comedy, satire, the didactic and the fantastic, developing resourcefully the theme of individual and social regeneration. First edition. Inscribed by the author to John McDiarmid. 4to. Publisher's original grey paper-covered boards with printed paper title label to the spine. Page edges untrimmed. Illustrated with 28 black and white etched plates. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and tight with minor cracking to the head of the joints and a little wear to the extremities. The contents, with a previous owner's (early twentieth century) bookplate to the front pastedown, light offsetting from the plates to the facing text pages and faint spotting to the edges of the plates, are otherwise wonderfully clean and bright throughout. The plates themselves remain bold and fresh. A superb copy, entirely in its original state. Inscribed by John Richardson in black ink to the half title page "To John McDiarmid Esq. / from his friend The Author". The first part this monumental work on the natural history of the Arctic by Sir John Richardson (1787-1865), the Scottish doctor, naturalist and Arctic explorer who served on Sir John Franklin's Arctic expeditions of 1819-22 and 1825-27 as ship's doctor and naturalist. Whilst in the Canadian Arctic as part of Franklin's overland expeditions, Richardson recorded his extensive observations and collected a large number of plant and animal specimens. On his return to England, following the second expedition, he began, with assistance from the naturalists William Swainson and William Kirby, to write his four-volume work of natural history, first published as individual volumes between 1829 and 1837. This present volume, dedicated to mammals, was the first to appear, with a second volume (concerning birds) published in 1831, followed by subsequent volumes on fish and insects, all superbly illustrated by Thomas Landseer. A key member of Franklin's team, Richardson aided in the mapping of a substantial area of the Canadian Arctic, in addition to making one of the most significant contributions to the understanding of the natural history of the region. Notably, following the infamous disappearance of Franklin's doomed 1845 Arctic expedition, Richardson also later travelled alongside John Rae in 1848-9 in search of his lost comrades on one of the subsequent (unsuccessful) rescue missions. The recipient of the present volume is most likely John McDiarmid (1790-1852), the influential Scottish journalist and author, popular in contemporary Scottish literary circles, who came from Richardson's hometown of Dumfries and was only three years his junior.
