Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. The first edition thus of this impressive collection of the works of Tory politician, poet and playwright George Granville, Lord Lansdowne. In his preface, Lansdowne explains that he was 'prevailed upon to give way to this present publication' because of the mistakes present in the numerous pirate editions of his work in circulation.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and with engraved head and tail pieces throughout.Alongside his political career, Lord Lansdowne was a reputed poet and playwright, stylistically similar to Dryden. He was an early supporter of Alexander Pope, serving as his first patron With the bookplate of Richard Luckett to the front pastedown. Luckett was a lecturer in seventeenth century literature at Cambridge University, and held the post of Pepys Librarian for thirty years. Also to the front pastedown is the illustrated bookplate of Elizabeth Handasyde. An excellent copy of this scarce first edition. 8vo, pp. [viii], 267; contemporary calf, rebacked. First edition: the major book of poetry by Alexander Pope's first patron; Windsor Forest was dedicated to him the following year. Up to this point Lord Lansdowne (1667-1735) had published only a few plays; of his verse Samuel Johnson did not have a high opinion: 'He had no ambition above the imitation of Waller, of whom he has copied the faults and very little more'. Included in this volume are poems addressed to the King, epistles to various ladies (most of them addressed to 'Myra'), a number of prologues and epilogues, and verses to John Dryden and Samuel Garth; there is also a brief 'Character of Mr. Wycherley' in prose. At the end is The British Enchanters, a dramatic poem which had been acted at the Haymarket, and published in 1706. Provenance: early and rather attractive engraved armorial bookplate of Ann Lloyd, with her signature on title page, and inscription 'A Lloyd no 1013' on pastedown. If her library amounted to over a thousand books in the early 18th century, that would have been quite a substantial collection for a woman of the period. Foxon p. 314; Rothschild 1051.

Vellum. Zustand: Near Fine. Not Stated (illustrator). A stunning vellum-bound large edition of the works of George Granville. Lord Lansdowne, or George Granville (1666-1735) was a prominent Tory politician, who sat in both the House of Commons and later the House of Lords. He was also a reputable poet and playwright, stylistically similar to Dryden, although his non-dramatic poetry was not held in high regard by Samuel Johnson, who felt it imitated Edmund Waller. However, Granville was a hearty encourager to Alexander Pope, serving as his first patron.Vignette illustrations throughout. Extra illustrated with two engravings which have been pasted to the front pastedown and rear endpapers, dated 1732 and 1748.In a fantastic half vellum binding with a crest to the front board. In a half vellum binding with a leather title pasted to the spine. Externally very smart, minor shelf wear to the spine and back board. Engravings, some from newspapers, have been pasted to the front pastedown and rear endpapers, dated 1732 and 1748. Internally firmly bound, pages a touch age toned but otherwise bright and clean. Near Fine. book.
