Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Liger, Louis. Le jardinier fleuriste et historiographe. Der historische Blumen-Gärtner oder Anweisung zur allgemeinen Anbauung der Blumen und Stauden die zur Auszierung eines Gartens dienen. Leipzig, Johann Friedrich Braun, 1716. 8vo. (30) + 416 + (2)p + pp417-560 + (32)p. With engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, 20 numbered engraved plates (of garden features and parterres) and 49 woodcuts (of which 9 show individual flowers on separate plates and 40 are in text), decorative head- and tail-pieces, capitals and printer s ornaments. Contemporary vellum. The first separately published German edition of the most influential and attractive gardening manual of the 18th century in Europe. Arranged in three parts the work encompasses the whole management, layout and culture of plants in the baroque flower garden. It is historically important as a guide to contemporary practice, the implements used (several charming woodcuts illustrate water-ing cans, wheelbarrows, urns, cloches, rakes and spades) and the flowers, herbs, shrubs and fruit-trees planted. The 20 engraved plates and allegorical frontispiece depict formal garden layouts, while accompanying descriptions instruct on the cultivation of such features as lattice-work galleries, arbours of clipped elms, mazes, regular and irregular bosquets , and the tracing and cutting of arabesque and geometric parterres. The manual first came out in France in 1704 and continued to be published throughout the 18th century (the Hunt copy is dated 1787). An English version (The retir d gardener) was published in 1706 by George London and Henry Wise. 3 woodcuts with old colouring; faint waterstain to outer edge of one or two central leaves, otherwise a well-preserved copy of this classic work. Seguier, Bibliotheca Botanica, 1740, p377. See also Hunt 685, and vol II, pp18-22, 325; and Henrey vol II, pp321-324; also J.C. Loudon, Encyclopaedia of Gardening, 1828, p1116 (giving a first French edition of 1703).
