Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. p. 65-80. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Is there a special conception of Hera in Homer? If so, did the poet who gave that fixed form to the epic which was handed down to posterity, create his own special picture of Hera, the sister and wife of Zeus, who in the Iliad is the one who most often opposes Zeus' plans? Hartmut Erbse, the editor of the scholia to the Iliad, thinks so. In his book Untersuchungen zur Funktion der Götter im Homerischen Epos (Berlin 1986) he ends his chapter on Hera with the following statement (208): "Die stolze, zielbewusste Here, die der Menishandlung entgegenwirkt, ist. . eine eigenwillige Schöpfung Homers." Or should one apply the same point of view as Joachim Latacz does on "Das Menschenbild Homers"?1 Whoever works within the tradition of singers has to complete, not diverge from the tradition, that is, he has to present a picture, modelled not by himself solely, but one which is derived from and belongs to his audience, the aristocracy of that time. Such a picture is in richness and complexity far superior to the one made by a single poet. But this complexity also causes controversies among the interpreters of later times.
