Third edition, the last to appear in the author's lifetime. First published in 1753, Linnaeus's pioneering work formalized binomial nomenclature for plants and is hailed in Hunt's botanical catalogue as "the most important single work in the world's botanical literature". This copy has an appealing provenance, from the library of a fellow of the Linnean Society. "Species plantarum was the first work to account for all kinds of plants then known for the world, to classify them according to a simple system. by which anyone can determine their identity, and to provide for each kind a name of two words. This addition of a binomial system of nomenclature - by no means original with Linnaeus, nor the raison d'etre of the opus - to the polynomial system has caused this work to be designated the starting point for the modern nomenclature of ferns and flowering plants" (Hunt). The third edition is a reprint of the second - which was substantially revised and expanded from the first - with some printing errors corrected. Provenance: Thomas Ruggles (c.1737-1813) of Clare, Suffolk, with his armorial ink stamp on the front pastedowns. Ruggles was a land owner, writer on law and agriculture, and a fellow of the Linnean Society of London. There are a couple of minor annotations in the text, very likely in his hand. Hunt 548 (1st ed.); Soulsby 510. Two volumes, octavo (198 x 115 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep, spines with raised bands, gilt lettering and elaborate floral decoration in compartments, board edges ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, blue silk book markers. Woodcut tailpieces. Spines darkened, some wear to spine ends, corners, and board edges, a few instances of stripping to covers, vol. II with small damp stain to upper margin of first half, faint offsetting to a couple of pages in vol. I from a pressed anemone flower between the pages for that genus, occasional minor marks, otherwise clean. A better than good copy.

Linnaeus, Carl (1707-78), praeses. Haartman, Johan Johansson (1725-87). Plantae hybridae. . . . 4to. [4] 30pp. Fold. eng. plate. 190 x 148 mm. Unbound. A few fox-marks, but fine. First Edition. Haartman's doctoral thesis, over which Linnaeus presided, signals an important change in Linnaeus's botanical ideas. "He was forced to relinquish confidence in the constancy of the number of species. In Peloria (1744) he described a monstrous form of Linaria vulgaris that he wrongly interpreted as a hybrid. . . . He thereafter held that new plant species could develop through hybridization (see Plantae hybridae [1751]) and reached the daring conclusion that within every genus only one species had originally been created" (DSB). Soulsby 1632. Extremely rare. .
