The plates by George Cooke. - Title page + 100 hand-coloured engraved plates, each followed by one, occasionally two text pages. Additional plate 684* (black and white). Plates and explaining text pages numbered from 601 to 700. With 3 pages index to vol. VII. Ca. 21 cm x ca. 17 cm. Marbeled end papers and all edges marbeled. Ribbon page marker. Full green calf with decorated and gilt covers and spine, with two red and gilt labels on spine. In English. - This is the quarto edition with fully coloured plates (a simultaneous published duodecimo edition has only partially coloured plates). - Here only vol. VII (of XX) with 100 + 1 plates (of 2000 + 1). - Stafleu and Cowan, Taxonomic Literature 2, 4.914 Little rubbed or bumped. New spine with mounted original spine, new hinges. No entries. Contemporary dark-green half morocco and marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Professional repair to the front hinge, else very good with some scattered foxing. The engraved plates are early impressions, beautifully and intricately hand-colored, thus imparting to each plant depicted a living, three-dimensional effect. *Nissen BBI* 2228.
