Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Twenty thousand years ago our planet was an icehouse. Temperatures were down six degrees; ice sheets kilometres thick buried much of Europe and North America and sea levels were 130m lower. The following 15 millennia saw an astonishing transformation as our planet metamorphosed into the temperate world upon which our civilisation has grown and thrived. One of the most dynamic periods in Earth history saw rocketing temperatures melt the great ice sheets like butter on a hot summer's day; feeding torrents of freshwater into ocean basins that rapidly filled to present levels. The removal of the enormous weight of ice at high latitudes caused the crust to bounce back triggering earthquakes in Europe and North America and provoking an unprecedented volcanic outburst in Iceland. A giant submarine landslide off the coast of Norway sent a tsunami crashing onto the Scottish coast while around the margins of the continents the massive load exerted on the crust by soaring sea levels encouraged a widespread seismic and volcanic rejoinder. In many ways, this post-glacial world mirrors that projected to arise as a consequence of unmitigated climate change driven by human activities. Already there are signs that the effects of climbing global temperatures are causing the sleeping giant to stir once again. Could it be that we are on track to bequeath to our children and their children not only a far hotter world, but also a more geologically fractious one? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Civil war has been a recurring feature of human societies throughout history - and an essential catalyst for major international conflict. And since 1945 the number of civil wars in the world has grown steadily, bringing devastation on a scale more traditionally associated with international wars. In spite of this, there is no classic treatise on civil war to compare with the classic works we have on war, revolution, or peace. On the one hand, historians have tended to treat the 'big' civil wars such as the American and the Spanish in isolation. On the other, social scientists have concentrated on identifying common patterns, without looking in too much detail at the specifics of any given conflict. Focusing on the numerous civil conflicts that have occurred throughout the world since the Second World War, Bill Kissane bridges this gap, asking what the recent social science literature adds to what we already know about civil war, but also how insights from the historical literature, from the ancient Greeks onwards, can help explain the violent experience of so many parts of the world since 1945. At its heart is the question of what makes the contemporary challenge posed by civil war so different to that of past periods - and what, if anything, is new about the contemporary experience of civil war at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Foolscap 4to (9 in x 6.5in). Title (A1) followed by the dedication To The Most High and Mightie Prince James., (A2-3), The Translators to the Reader (A4+8 pp. without signatures), The names and order of all of the Bookes of the Olde and New Testament, with the number of their Chapters (final page of foregoing without signature), The Old Testament, Apocrypha, and The New Testament (with separate title: London: Robert Barker and John Bill, 1630). Printed in English black letter in 72 lines double columns. The first edition of 1611 is in 59 lines double columns. Alfred Pollard, (Records of the English Bible, 1911 p.67) notes that the first change from 59 to 72 was "a folio reprint for church use in smaller type" reducing the leaves need from 732 to 508. According to this source ".a third edition in the largest type was published in 1617, a fourth in 1634, and a fifth in 1640". This copy of the 1630 quarto edition has four signed sheets followed by four unsigned sheets throughout. This copy does not have the 18 leaves of the Genealogies of Holy Scripture and a sheet with a map of Canaan. Pollard notes, "Inserted at the binder's pleasure after the preface.are usually eighteen leaves of the Genealogies of Holy scripture and a sheet containing a map of Canaan with a table.on the reverse. In October 1610 John Speed had obtained a privilege from the king enabling him for ten years to saddle every edition of the Scriptures with his decoratively printed but useless Genealogies so the cost of the book was needlessly increased." (Pollard, p. 63). So clearly the Genealogies and the map are not always present especially after 1621 and are John Speed's products, not inherent parts of the Barker Bible. Original blind tooled polished calf with blind initials IB at the top of the upper side and initials IW at the bottom over original hickory boards. Nailed brass center and corners on both sides, upper and lower sides nailed clasps for leather straps (no longer present). Old but not original endpapers and blanks at each end. Re-backed in brown calf over four original heavy cords. Fine professional re-backing to original blind decorated boards in clean attractive condition but with some minor calf loss at the edges. Brasses have round centers for "jewels", none present, and the leather strap for the clasps are gone. Endpapers and blanks at the front and back are replaced, but the original text begins with the general title (signed A) and ends with "finis" on the recto of the final leaf of the New Testament with the final imprint of Barker and Bill dated 1630 and the verso blank. Old by hand note of marriage of James and Ann Seredy August 9, 1781, on the first page of the dedication (A2) and other family history with dates of 1737-1796 on the verso of A3. Age toning and moderate soil, moderate water stain at the end increasingly fading inward within 10 sheets. General title is mounted on an old sheet. H10301 All Items Are Sent Insured.
