"Dean Candell's educational opportunities, in matters of the heart, were unusual in the extreme. His two principal instructors, Ethel and Verna, pursued their task, sometimes willingly and sometimes not, under remarkably varied and changing circumstances. Beginning as high-school girls and continuing as wives and mothers, they managed between them to create the episodes of tragedy and comedy -- or so it seemed to Dean -- that initiated him into the world of emotional maturity."
