FIRST EDITION. Uncut in orig. blue boards, beige paper spine, paper label; boards sl. marked, spine worn & chipping in places. Ink gift inscription on leading f.e.p.: 'Hubert J. Norman from his friend Holbrook Jackson, May 18. 1931'. Lord Jeffrey Francis, 1773-1850, was a Scottish literary critic and judge; he was critical of the passion and fancy of the high Romantics like Shelley and Keats, but praised the more subdued works of Samuel Rogers and Thomas Campbell. He wrote occasional verses himself, on this occasion choosing for his inspiration a recently published scientific treatise on the functioning on the brain: 'A considerable portion of "The Craniad," will be found to consist of versifications of the passages contained in a work, entitled, "The Physiognomonical System of Drs Gall and Spurzheim;" and this, no doubt, will be recognized by those who have perused that work with attention, whether advocates for the system of the learned Doctors, or no'. This copy is inscribed to the psychiatrist Hubert James Norman from the journalist and publisher Holbrook Jackson.

An Acerbic Call for Law Reform With a Dedicatory Preface to Sir Walter Scott Jeffrey, Francis, Lord Jeffrey [1773-1850]. Peter and His Enemies. Edinburgh: William P. Nimmo, 1859. 31, [1] pp. Two woodcut vignettes. Octavo (6-3/4" x 4-1/2"). Disbound pamphlet. Moderate toning, internally clean. Rare. $450. * First edition. Jeffrey was the longtime editor of the Edinburgh Review, a Whig literary journal with notable contributors including Sir Walter Scott. He would go on to a career in Parliament and the Court of Session. Published posthumously, Peter and His Enemies is an acerbic fictional account comparing the life of "Peter Gilchrist" to Scott's character Peter Peebles and intended to expose abuses in the law and advocate for law reform. A second edition was published later in 1859. OCLC locates 3 copies of the first edition, none outside Scotland. Not in the British Museum Catalogue, which lists the second edition.

Handsomely bound in full tan calf by Nutt & Son, spines gilt in compartments, olive green morocco labels, double-ruled gilt borders. Armorial bookplates of H.S.P. Winterbotham. A v.g. copy. Jeffrey was, in 1802, one of the cofounders of the Edinburgh Review, and from 1803 until 1829 served as its editor-in-chief. He contributed 200 articles to the journal, on a broad range of subjects, from the arts and literature, to politics, history and current affairs. Although the journal was liberal in outlook, and generally supportive of Romantic trends in literature, it could nonetheless illicit controversy, and under Jeffrey's stewardship delivered some particularly scathing criticism of Romanticism's leading lights. In 1806 Thomas Moore famously challenged Jeffrey to a duel, following suggestions of immorality in his poetry. Proceedings were thankfully halted before either party was injured, and writer and critic would eventually become friends.

FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. Half titles, front. port. vol. I with sl. offsetting. Ads on pastedowns. Orig. purple morocco-grained cloth by John Gray, Edinburgh, borders blocked in blind, spines lettered in gilt; a little rubbed, spines darkened & sl. worn at heads & tails, inner hinges cracking. A good sound copy. Jeffrey, 1773-1850, was a Scottish lawyer and critic for the Edinburgh Review. He reviewed many of Byron's early works, and for his fairness and impartiality was paid the following tribute by him: 'I do not know you, and may never know / Your face - but you have acted on the whole, / Most nobly; and I own it from my soul'. Thomas Moore, on the other hand, took extreme exception to Jeffrey's review of his Epistles, Odes, and other Poems. Jeffrey had condemned their 'immoral tendency' with such vehemence that Moore took it as a personal insult, and challenged him to a duel at Chalk Farm on August 11, 1806. The police arrived at the critical moment, and the two authors were bound over to keep the peace. It was later found that Jeffrey's pistols were not loaded. There followed a complete reconciliation between the two men, and a long friendship was established. Jeffrey later became a friend of Charles Dickens, with Dickens naming his third son Francis Jeffrey Dickens after him. In 1850 Jeffrey was buried in Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh, and four years later Lord Cockburn was buried beside him.
