Buch Erstausgabe
8 volumes octavo 8 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches, HANDSOMELY LEATHER BOUND IN HALF MOROCCO GILT BY BAYNTUN OF BATH. The FIRST edition. 4 volumes of text and 4 volumes of plates- complete. In addition to the plate volumes the text is illustrated with numerous wood engravings. Some discolouration to the edges of the plates - as usual because of the paper used but a lovely set in a fine binding in good condition. Arboreta are special places for the cultivation and display of a wide variety of different kinds of trees and shrubs. Probably the most important early proponent of the arboretum in the English-speaking transatlantic world was the prolific landscape gardener and writer, John Claudius Loudon (1783 1843) who undertook many gardening commissions and published the Gardener's Magazine, Encyclopaedia of Gardening and other major works. Loudon's Arboretum et Fruticetum Britannicum, 8 vols. first published in 1838 is probably the most significant work on the subject in British history and included an account of all trees and shrubs that were hardy in the British climate, an international history of arboriculture, an assessment of the cultural, economic and industrial value of trees and four volumes of plates.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
2pp., 4to. On a bifolium, with the main text on the recto of the first page, and the postscript with the address on the verso of the second. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Tipped-in onto leaf removed from an autograph album. The book he enquired after on the previous day was 'any spanish work translated into french or English Interlineally for a beginner in that language'. He has seen German and Italian books 'so translated', and will be grateful if Jones can suggest a Spanish one. He is sending 'Dr: Spikers shoes', and will 'send a letter in a day or too, say on Monday next, when I shall surely have got an answer from Taylor as to my book. Qy. if he does not take it, wd. it be worth while shewing it to your people?' Loudon's 'Remarks on the Construction of Hothouses' had been published 'Printed for J. Taylor by Richard and Arthur Taylor' the previous year. There is no record of any work by Loudon published by Lackingtons.
