Ref.: Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale di Italia ITICCUMILE. 8 volumes In 8º, 23.3x16.9 cm, with xlviii, 688; 780; 674; 708; 620; 854; 882; xii, 802 pp. Binding: Contemporary full calf, with raised bands, red labels and very intricate gilt tools on spine. All volumes contain a library label, or traces of one, glued to the tail of the spine. Each volume includes the index of the corresponding entries and subjects. The last volume contains Foreword to the Reader; indexes of the supplements, and general indexes. Very rare third edition, the last one published before the author?s death. The first edition was printed in Bologna in 1746. This work has had dozens of editions until 1899, a little before the church started to work on what was to become the Code of Canon Law of 1917. The National Library of Portugal has no copy on record. Porbase (portal for all public libraries) acknowledges just one incomplete copy at the National Library of Elvas, which should be the only one existing in Portugal. A valuable and important work for the study of the Catholic Church, how it works, and its relationship with other social institutions. It is an extensive and complete encyclopaedia of religious sciences, including canon law, theology, and morals, based on the teaching of Popes, on the constitutions, decisions of Councils, decrees of the Sacred Congregations of the Holy See and of the Roman Curi, which were disclosed since the beginning of the church. The author presents a very open doctrine even considering, for instance that the jews should not be cast out od the Christian kingdoms as long as they abide to a minimum set of rules.
