Vol. 3: Dampness stains to bottom corners of last pages. Vol. 4: Wormholes in endpapers have crept through to nearby pages. Old letter inside. Vol. 5: Small wormhole in last page of text does not affect legibility. Vol. 7: Wormholes eaten into title page. Vol. 8: Some thumbing and soiling inside, especially page 23. Latin notes on notepaper tucked inside. Darkened corner on page 403. Vol. 9: Rear hinge breaking inside. Vol. 10: Front endpapers and title page are ragged and title page and following page loosening. Pages 9 - 16, 173-17 have dampstained edges. Lucius Ferraris was an 18th-century canonist of the Franciscan order who lived in Italy and died sometime before 1763. The first edition of this encyclopedia of religious knowledge, perhaps the first Catholic encyclopedia, was published in Bologna in 1746. The "handy library" as its title translates, consists of alphabetical Latin listings in double columns. A popular work, it was reprinted well into the late 19th century.
