Lyell's scientific interest took him along the regular routes as well as into the remoter corners seldom seen by other travelers. . Lyell's description of the coastal islands of the southeastern coast, erosion, topography, and fossils in Georgia and Alabama are an important contribution to travel literature, while his detailed observations of the Mississippi Valley from the delta to the mouth of the Ohio River equal or excell the account of other travelers." First edition, 8vo, xii, 520, 32 advertisement pp. Two plates and 58 text figures, three leaves of contemporary manuscript notes on the text loosely inserted. Recent maroon morocco, an excellent copy. The last major work of Lyell's life, it was coloured by the publication of Darwin's "Origin of Species" four years earlier. Lyell couldn't bring himself to champion the new theories, and his impartial overview of the competing theories in the later chapters disappointed Darwin, although he admitted "The whole. struck me as a compilation, but of the highest quality, for when possible the facts have been verified on the spot."
